Chinese President Xi Jinping Monday vowed to build the military into a "Great Wall of steel" to protect the country's sovereignty and sought a bigger role for Beijing in global affairs, days after The Great Wall of China is one of the largest building-construction projects ever undertaken, done so with the sole purpose of protecting the countryโ€™s northern region. It actually consists of numerous walls, many of them parallel to each other, built over around two millennia across the northern part of China and the southern region of Mongolia. The Great Wall of China is a barrier fortification in northern China running west-to-east 13,171 miles (21,196 km) from the Jiayuguan Pass (in the west) to the Hushan Mountains in Liaoning Province in the east, ending at the Bohai Gulf. It crosses eleven provinces/municipalities (or ten, according to some authorities) and two autonomous regions China must modernise its military to make it a "Great Wall of Steel", President Xi Jinping has said. Speaking for the first time in his precedent-breaking third term as head of state, Mr Xi called The Great Wall of China is the largest man-made structure in the world. But in China, people usually will not use the word โ€œbigโ€ to describe the Great Wall. Its Chinese name โ€œ้•ฟๅŸŽโ€ means long wall. The total length of the Great Wall is 21196.18km (13170 miles); the average height of the walls is 7.8m (25.6 feet) and the tallest is 14m 1DZx.
